  SHAHRBIJAR Storage Dam
According to the studies conducted on water supplying plans, the drinking water of central and eastern cities near Guilan province is provided by the large water-treatment plant in Rasht, the first phase of which with a capacity of 95,000,000 m/y and using Sefidroud River’s raw water is being operated. However, with consideration of the severe erosion of this river’s catchment basin which results in an increase in its sediment load, in addition to the fact that physical treatment of its water for drinking uses is not economical, particularly during operations and due to the existence of pollutants resulting from the wastes of industrial factories, fertilizers and pesticides used in the fields along Sefidroud River that contaminate it on one hand, and the existence of an guaranteed water resource of high quality at a proper distance from Rasht water treatment plant on the other, studies conducted on using the said river’s water led the consultant to recommend constructing Bijar City Storage dam across Zilaki River with the purpose of providing drinking water for 13 cities including Rasht, Khomam, Anzali, Siahkal, Lahijan, Langroud, Astaneh Ashrafieh, Kiashahr, etc. and villages located along transfer lines of these cities which began in 1990. However, due to limited credits, the process has been quite slow.
Since the year 2000 and with the increase of constructional credits, the said studies were done more seriously and quickly. Around the early 2004, the constructional operations of the project started with the support of the Ministry of Power Generation and had quite noticeable developments. If the recommended credits are provided, based on the predicted time table, it would be ready for operation by early 2011. It should be said that the physical development of the plan, in early 2009, was 32%.
